This years International Mediation Summit 2021 took place on the 29th-30th September in Haikou, China and was co-hosted by the Chinese Council for the Promotion of International Trade (‘CCPIT’) and Hainan provincial government, undertaken by Commercial Legal Services Centre of CCPIT and CCPIT Hainan Sub-council. The summit had a total 14 countries with 47 guests giving speeches. With more than 400 professionals in attendance such as mediators, lawyers and arbitrators, the event was extremely successful.
The theme of this year’s Summit was “New Era, Idea and Pattern- Accelerating the High-Quality Development in Alternative Dispute Resolution Mechanism” and Patrick was invited as a panelist on the topic of “Comparison of Contemporary International Dispute Resolution Mechanisms”. The summit aims to help businesses to understand how to resolve economic and trade disputes as well as share knowledge and experience on mediation systems and practices. Other topics of discussion involved how to resolve disputes on intellectual property and who owned the rights to IP.
Mediation is a key tool in helping businesses to manage international commercial disputes whilst maintaining good relationships between the two parties. Having access to this knowledge and skill set enables more effort to be put into resolving disputes before going legal.
Patrick’s presentation compared the types and benefits of international ADR from a debt collection perspective rather than from a mediator/arbitrator point of view.
